It means cutting through old welds on three sides on each pocket.

Over the last week I had bought three different kinds of thin metal cutting wheels. I bought a few at Home hardware, a few more at my local car part supplier. At the advice from a welder friend I also bought some at another parts store.

I am going to rate these disks as how many disk it took to remove a stake pocket. I mean a cutting disk is a cutting disk right. I mean they were all roughly in the 4 to 5 dollar range per disk for a 4.5 inch grinder.

I choose the one on the left

First the Home Hardware disk it took three disks to cut one stake pocket. The disk rapidly wore out and actually threw chunks. No matter how hard I tried to cut smooth they would not.

Then I tried out one of the other brands. Made by Jet the power plus three.

Two disks one stake pocket cut and not completely. I had to use one of the Walter Zip cut disks to finish the job.

The Walter zip + disk recommended to me by a welding professional. Thanks to Terry At Swartzy Welding in Fairview. (I know a shameless plug) I was amazed at how the disk performed. I finished the second incomplete stake pocket and then proceeded to cut two more. I still had meat left on the cutting wheel. Enough to cut the top weld on one more. Clearly they are not created equal.

Summary : 12 stake pockets to cut.

Walter 2.5 stake pockets one disk = $1.60 per stake pocket. Total $ 19.20

Jet 2.5 disks per one stake pocket= $ 10 per stake pocket Total $ 120

Home Hardware 3 disks per stake pocket= $12 per stake pocket Total $ 144.00

This is not rocket science for me. This is a low buck project.

I am off to buy more Walter disks. A huge electrical storm is brewing, anyways and standing next to an all metal frame just doesn’t sound smart right now.

Rod.

There were other versions of this song available on you tube.
