Spring is God’s way of saying, ‘One more time!’

Robert Orben

6:30 in the AM. I was woken by the normal caterwauling. I stumbled out to see another pretty sunrise. I grabbed my cell phone, so I could snap a pic.

Standing just outside my door, the timing definitely Gods work, I heard the familiar sound of old friends. Twenty feet above me a small flock of Canada geese. Honking out a message. “We are back and its spring”

It was nice to see. My heart lifted for a few seconds, I went back inside smiling a little.

At least till I saw a cat squatting in the corner having a pee, and not in the litterbox, which I cleaned and refilled with clean litter last night. After a quick cat chase a little yelling I went back to my spring bliss.

Oh well, the geese today and the pussy willows I saw yesterday confirmed that even with snow still on the ground it was spring. The seasons here really don’t give a shit about the date, only about the birds returned, buds appearing and snow leaving for a while.

I went back out to grab some snow for melt, the snow that was now hard as ice. I had to use a shovel to get a bowlful to melt. I knew that there was a time coming in between snow and rain, that there would be a time with no water. The toxic pond would have weeks of ice on top. The tank for rain also flash-frozen last fall by an early freeze. For weeks I have been stockpiling water for this purpose. I didn’t have much only about ten days’ worth. Probably enough.

Feeling human today, not sure why, last nights sleep was anything but restful, one Technicolor epic dream after another. Maybe the reason I feel ok is the coffee I have beside me. Ya that’s got to be it. Its the coffee, the morning cup. My only drug.

In a few minutes, after coffee of course, I had plans to get back to the construction of my desk. I needed a place to work again, my fortress of solitude.

Nope no delusions of grandeur here, I am not superman, quite the opposite. I just needed a place to do a few things without tripping on a cat.

Today I hoped to finish construction, sand it a little and see if I had a clear coating for the top and maybe even get it painted. Tomorrow I hoped to populate it with electronics and start working. I hoped.

It is later in the day now I managed to get some work done.

I need to fill the gaps in the pine boards. I will probably use white caulking,  cause that is what I have in stock. The whole desk project was made with scrap wood, none of it very straight. I never did buy the jointer need to make those boards straight. This was never meant to be a fine art project but a place I can do projects, soldering, gun cleaning, model building, design on the computer, and the xbox was probably coming up.

I managed to get most of the walls done, the desk sanded and even found a tiny can of polyurethane with even tinier instructions. I painted it on then read online that it is a 24 hour drying time. The great part it got done, found the boards, cut the boards table saw and chop saw, then ran them through the planer. All in all, I got to spend an hour in my wood workshop. I am thankful for that. I need to do alot of organizing and cleaning in there. It is not a heated space so working in winter doesn’t happen. I like doing that stuff.

I just went back up there and the clear was almost dry, mostly because the wood soaked it up,  so I opened the tiny can emptied the contents on the desk and painted it over the surface. This made the most sense, there wasn’t enough for any other projects and the brush was still wet.

So now I wait till morning.
